Directors of Mental Hospital
Dr. Bishnu Prasad Sharma(Late)
Dr. Sharma was the first director of the mental hospital. He was the person who played the vital role in establishing the mental hospital at its current location in Lagankhel. Prior to this, mental health services were being delivered through the Psychiatry OPD and a 12 bedded psychiatric unit in BirHospital.

Dr. Dhruba Man Shrestha
Dr. Shrestha held the post of the director of this hospital after Dr. Sharma. Research activities related to mental health was initiated during his tenure. A large scale survey of the prevalence of mental retardation in theKathmanduvalley was carried out during his times.
Similarly, the Methadone Maintenance Program was started during his term in 1994 AD. The program was successfully run for 9 years; however it was stopped in 2002 AD due to various reasons.

Dr. Nirakar Man Shrestha
A new inpatient block was constructed during his term, and the hospital’s indoor section is now situated in this block.

Dr. Kapil Dev Upadhyay
Dr. Upadhyay held the post of the director for a short period. During his tenure, he was involved in many activities related to community mental health. He was actively involved in teaching learning activities of the post graduate residents posted in mental hospital.

Dr. Surendra Sherchan
Dr. Sherchan is the current director of this hospital and he is actively involved in various developmental activities in the hospital. Many new programs have been initiated including the Methadone maintenance program, hot-line telephone service, extended Paying OPD services and the community mental health services. Lots of activities related to infrastructure development of the hospital are being conducted.
Similarly, the initiative to install a deep boring system along with a water treatment plant has been undertaken to ease the insufficient water supply at the hospital. A separate direct electricity line from the Nepal electricity corporation has been installed because of which the hospital is now free from any load shedding woes.
